SUMMARY:Basil's Table presents: The Human Library
DESCRIPTION:Why in the age of social media and online communication do we feel so disconnected? \nAn old man sits by a fire telling a story to a group of adults and children. Process print after H. Thompson. \nStories teach us about life\, ourselves and about others. \nThere’s something very human about sharing a story with another person in relaxed surrounds. \nThe Human Library is an event that aims to create and develop dialogue and understanding between people. \nA story’s most important function is to remind us that we are not alone in the world. \nHow it works: the Human Library is a concept that ‘lends’ people rather than books! \nI have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of a Library – Jorge Luis Borges \nKelvin Club \nFinger food is available from 6 – 6:30pm. Drinks are available from the bar. \n \n

SUMMARY:The Art of Living - Bring back the Story
DESCRIPTION:The Human Library presents: The Art of Living – Bring back the Story \nCome to an interactive night of sharing stories. A space where people connect and meet in a meaningful way to: \n\nExplore\nConnect\nLearn.\n\nStorytelling is a social and cultural activity of sharing about one’s life. \nStories: \n\nLet us share information in a way that creates an emotional connection\nTeach us about life\, ourselves\, and about others.\n\nStorytelling is the social and cultural activity of sharing stories. Every culture has its own stories or narratives\, which are shared as a means of entertainment\, education\, cultural preservation or instilling moral values. \nStories have been used to hand down learning and knowledge for thousands of years. \nA good story engages our curiosity\, emotions and imagination. \nStories have a transformative power to allow us to see the world in a different way than we do if we just encounter it on our own. Stories are an entry point to understanding a different experience of the world. \nThis aspect of storytelling – presenting a different perspective of the world – is important when it comes to connecting with each other. It gives us an opportunity to learn from another person’s experience and it can shape\, strengthen or challenge our opinions and values. When a story catches our attention and engages us\, we are more likely to absorb the message and meaning within it than if the same message was presented simply in facts and figures. \nAn old man sits by a fire telling a story to a group of adults and children. Process print after H. Thompson/ (Image: public domain) \nWhen someone tells us their own personal story\, we catch a glimpse of a view of the world that may be slightly or radically different from our own. When we see the world as they see it\, or walk in their shoes\, the experience can inspire empathy within them. \nDate:23/02/2023\nTickets close: 21/02/2023\nTime: 6pm \nFinger food will be available from 6:00pm–6:30pm \n\nDrinks can be purchased from the Bar\n\nLocation:\nThe Kelvin Club\n14-30 Melbourne Pl\, Melbourne\nCost: $25 / $15 concession.

SUMMARY:Basil's Table: Building co-operative futures in the tech bros era
DESCRIPTION:The future of cooperation in a time of uncertainty \nRSVP: 5pm\, 5 December\, 2022 / finger food / dress up a little  \nAll proceeds cover costs and contribute to our co-operative work (we are a not-for-profit / non-distributing co-op) \nBookings essential (see bottom of page). \n \nThis time we are going ‘big picture’. Christmas in all its forms is coming up for many\, and the New Year is just around the corner. A good time to take stock and think about the future! Also\, a good time to simply kick back with co-operators and friends and enjoy a bit of good cheer and conviviality. \nHave the tech-bros got all the answers? With the passing of Deliveroo\, and Twitter appearing to slowly die like the proverbial canary in the coal mine (or alternatively morphing into a bird of prey) many are looking for new ways of organising and owning the platforms we use – to build stronger local community relationships for social\, economic\, and environmental resilience. \nWe ask:\n• In the face of global political and climate uncertainty – are populist ideologies from the left or right the only alternatives?\n• Mutual aid and reciprocity – what kinds of social\, technological\, and environmental systems\, institutions and relationship building initiatives are required? \nFeaturing:\n• Elena Pereyra – CoHousing Australia\n• Jose Ramos – Action Foresight\n• Bridgette Engeler – Entrepreneurship and Innovation\, Swinburne University\n• Alexar Pendashteh – Technologist / Social Entrepreneur. \nThe discussion will be opened by 888 Co-operative Causeway Patron\, Basil Varghese and facilitated by co-op board members\, Sonja Schulze (and Antony McMullen). \nIn addition – there will be a very special announcement – regarding an opportunity to join our co-operative as part of a broader exciting initiative with a major university. \nWho will be speaking? \nElena \n \nElena Pereyra is a registered architect on sabbatical while she undertakes a PhD at Deakin University. She specialises in sustainable urban systems\, regenerative development\, participatory planning\, co-design\, and collaborative housing. With experience across public buildings including international aquariums and local education projects\, apartments and private residential\, her focus has moved to environmentally and socially sustainable design. \nElena has served on the board of Cohousing Australia since 2013 and as Chair (2016-) and now Co-Chair (2019-). Elena is passionate about the environmental\, social\, and economic potential of cohousing and seeks to support its feasibility in the Australian multi-residential housing context. SUMMARY:Mutual social impact: investing in each other for the 21st century
DESCRIPTION:Our next event will be at the Kelvin Club with a heavy-hitting panel to discuss the role of modern mutuals in meeting 21st century social challenges. \nOur panellists Lynne McLennan\, Adam Vise and Roland Wettenhall will discuss the roots of the friendly society movement in addressing social needs through mutual effort\, the steps mutuals like UFS Dispensaries and Australian Unity are taking to meet new social challenges\, and the recent policy changes that mean modern mutuality is poised for a renaissance as the social impact model of choice. \nLynne McLennan is CEO of UFS Dispensaries. In her time as CEO she has taken UFS from seven pharmacies and a gift store to being a high-profile member-owned social enterprise with 22 pharmacies\, three medical centres\, a day spa\, a dedicated COVID-19 vaccination and testing clinic and Supercare Nursing Services operated at sixteen pharmacies across Victoria. \nAdam Vise is Group Treasurer at Australian Unity. Adam has played a leading role in Australian Unity’s pioneering use of Mutual Capital Instruments to raise $350 million\, which included large placements from mutual superannuation fund HESTA. He is also Chair of Birchal\, a leading equity crowdfunding platform that has supported a seed funding raise by a new environmental services mutual. \nRoland Wettenhall is a historian of friendly societies in Australia. Roland will share some fascinating (and sometimes hairy) stories about the role of the friendlies in providing for Australians for hundreds of years. \nDate and time: Thursday 26 May\, 6.00pm – 7.45pm (AEST).\nLocation: The Kelvin Club\, 30 Melbourne Pl\, Melbourne.\nCost: $25 (Full)\, $20 (Co-op/Union/Kelvin Club members)\, $15 (Concession)\, Free (Financial members of 888 Co-operative Causeway)\nBookings are essential: see booking links at bottom of page\nFood and drink: Finger food included\, drinks at bar prices\nContact us at coopcauseway@gmail.com for any inquiries\, including about waiving the ticket price for this event \nEnjoy some finger-food on arrival. Purchase drinks at the bar in convivial and quirky surrounds. \nKelvin Club \nIntroduction and concluding reflection: Basil Varghese\, 888 Co-operative Causeway Patron\nModerated by: Antony McMullen\, 888 Co-operative Causeway Chairperson. \nBackground info \nA recent article highlighted that launching a social enterprise\, or investing for impact\, are new models of social business\, but it’s a model that co-ops and mutuals have been pursuing for centuries! Co-operatives and mutuals have been crowdfunding community wellbeing long before the terms social enterprise and crowdfunding were even invented. \nAccording to the BCCM\, Mutual Capital Instruments (MCIs) are a new type of share that can only be issued by mutual entities\, that enable the raising of investment capital\, while protecting the mutual ownership structure. Developed through the Treasury Laws (Mutual Reforms) Act 2019\, MCIs function to make the Australian Corporations Act operate fairly for mutually owned businesses\, allowing mutuals to compete on an equal footing with other firm types. In November 2020\, the BCCM member Australian Unity became Australia’s first mutual to issue MCIs. MCIs are similar to Co-operative Capital Units (CCUs). \nThe old AMP in Tasmania \nLast century there were turf battles between ‘the friendlies’ who employed their own doctors for their members and those in private practice represented by the precursor of the Australian Medical Association. Australian Unity was formed in 1840\, when eight people met in a pub in Melbourne to form a friendly society to look after the health and wellbeing of its members. Despite other mutual enterprises such as AMP (formerly the Australian Mutual and Provident Society) selling out of member ownership\, exceptions like Australian Unity and UFS pharmacies have shown how co-operatives and mutuals can meet the challenges of the 21st Century without diminishing their community-driven values. \nTake a look at this article by Roland Wettenhall to explore this rich history ahead of the event. \nIf purchasing a ticket poses a problem – please contact us for a waiver coopcauseway@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Cooperating our way out of crises with Melina Morrison
DESCRIPTION:888 is pleased to present the second Basil’s Table event\, which will be held virtually.  \nAustralians are living in a time of uncertainty post bushfires\, and now during a pandemic. Can we look to each other for mutual support in these uncertain times? \n \nBasil Varghese\, a veteran Melbourne-based community builder and advocate for social justice\, will lead a dialogue with Melina Morrison (pictured)\, CEO of the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM)\, about how cooperation and co-operative enterprises can play a part in building our way out of the crisis\, and into new prosperity. We will also hear about what personally drives this engaging social economy leader. Find out: \n\nWhat drew Melina to co-ops and the BCCM?\nHow do co-ops empower people to lift themselves out of poverty?\nWhere co-operatives stand after a series of local (fires\, drought) and global (COVID-19) crises.\n\nMelina Morrison is a well-known advocate for member owned businesses. Melina was successful in advocating for a Federal Government inquiry into the co-operative and mutual business sector\, which handed down 17 ground-breaking reforms. SUMMARY:Basil’s Table - Banking on the future in a climate of change
DESCRIPTION:Are you thinking what Kenneth Haynes QC (pictured above with Treasurer Josh Frydenberg) is thinking?  \nThe Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking\, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry uncovered some difficult truths about the way banking actually works in the Commonwealth of Australia. A surprising\, and underreported feature of the Commission was the noticeable absence of member-owned financial institutions such as customer-owned and mutual banks\, credit unions and building societies. What is it about these kinds of financial institutions that kept them out of the Commission and out of the bad news stories? \nOther areas to potentially explore will be the challenges and opportunities for customer-owned banks in the post Royal Commission environment. How can mutual and customer-owned banks work with the broader social and solidarity economy movement to build a new economy\, at a time when our natural environment is under existential threat? \nExplore the issues with a different kind of banker – Rowan Dowland\, Bank Australia \nPicture: Bank Australia \nBank Australia states that it is ‘the bank with clean money’. Thankfully\, it doesn’t invest in fossil fuels\, live animal export\, gambling\, the arms industry and tobacco. Apart from ethical investment and not featuring in the Royal Commission – what is the difference between customer-owned banks compared to banks that are merely owned by external shareholders? Are there member-to-member advantages?  \nCome along to the inaugural  ‘Basil’s Table’ and enjoy an intimate discussion with Rowan Dowland who heads up the Bank Australia’s strategy and planning area.  \nRowan has been at Bank Australia since 1994 and has seen a lot of changes since that time. In this discussion we will explore what personally motivates this social economy leader. What is the relationship between people and profit? Are we naturally adversarial or is greater cooperation possible?  \n\nBookings essential – get your tickets below \nWhere: Kelvin Club 14-30 Melbourne Pl\, Melbourne \nWhen: 6-7:30pm\, Tuesday 25th of February \nCatering: finger-food on arrival \nDressups: low-key smart-casual – no thongs\, singlets… or shorts. \nPlease note: audio-visual recording will be employed at this event and once registered we will occasionally send you information about future 888 Co-operative Causeway activity.  \n\n888 Co-operative Causeway\nBasil’s Table: listen\, learn and connect \nAre you interested in the re-emergent social economy that includes co-operatives\, mutual benefit societies\, associations\, foundations and social enterprises? These kinds of enterprises produce goods\, services and knowledge in ways that meet the needs of the community they serve through the pursuit of social and environmental purpose\, and the fostering of solidarity.  \n888 Co-operative Causeway is pleased to announce a new interview series featuring emerging as well as more seasoned social economy leaders.  \nPicture: Joaquim Borge \nBasil’s Table is an interview series conducted by Basil Varghese\, a well-known Melbourne- based community builder and advocate for social justice\, who has long been committed to ‘bridging the gap between those that have and have not’. As a Patron of 888 Co-operative Causeway\, Basil hosts these conversations with special guests at the Kelvin Club in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD on topics relevant to building a connected community across Victoria. \n‘Basil’s Table’ will introduce key issues in the social and solidarity economy. The discussions will be intimate one-on-one affairs\, and will also provide opportunities for our audience to ask questions\, and be a part of the conversation. As with all 888 Co-operative Causeway events – come along and join in the conversation\, and meet some new people to connect and collaborate with. Finger food is provided on arrival to ensure you are welcome.  \nWho is Basil?  \nBasil was born in Dar-es-salaam\, that ancient port in East Africa; the eldest son in a large family of eight brothers and one sister. After moving around Australia Basil based himself in Melbourne. Basil’s career has been dedicated to working with and for those experiencing disadvantage in Australian society. Basil believes that poverty is a form of oppression on a continuum connected to racism\, cultural and ethnic chauvinism\, sexism and other forms of injustice; and\, that it is always a systemic or structural issue.  \nBasil is the former CEO and Ambassador for National Education & Employment Foundation (NEEF) and has also held leadership roles in the Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL)\, the Ecumenical Migration Centre (EMC)  and the Melbourne and Aboriginal Community College (Toundi) in Adelaide. SUMMARY:From charity to solidarity - overseas aid and economic development
DESCRIPTION:Meet Elsa and Lanu \nTimorese co-operators\, Elsa Pinto (pictured above working in her community) and Lanu de Sousa are inspiring people. Elsa is working with farming communities to reduce Timorese reliance on imported food. Lanu has established a grass-roots credit union that is assisting three hundred families to access credit for the first time. Both are passionate about the potential of co-operative and mutual enterprise (CMEs) to transform their economy. Additionally\, they are studying community development at Victoria University … but we think they can already teach us a thing or two. \nElsa and Lanu’s work has inspired the members of the 888 Co-operative Causeway and we would like to actively contribute to their relationships within the Victorian co-operative and development communities\, and their work more broadly … and you are invited. \nFrom charity to solidarity – overseas aid and economic development \nTimor Leste remains one of the poorest countries in the world; but\, we also know there is great untapped potential. \nPeople in Timor desperately need access to credit to build their economic independence so as to live a prosperous life. Sadly\, most of the food people eat in Timor is imported. \nTimor receives much-needed aid from international donors and relies on income from oil deposits\, but this is not enough to break the cycle of poverty. To move beyond dependency there is a need to diversify the Timorese economy to build ‘common wealth’. \nThe Event \nTimor restored independence on the 20th of May 2002. Leading up to independence Australia supported the Timorese people through providing peacekeepers (under the command of Sir Peter Cosgrove). This event provides an opportunity for Australians and the broader Timor community in Australia to continue to practically build solidarity. \nThe event will be held at the quirky Kelvin Club with finger food provided. \nHear from Elsa\, Lanu and other inspiring speakers … \nSamantha Bond\, Senior Organiser at Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA \n \nSamantha is involved in some groundbreaking work. The majority of the Timor Leste population live and work in rural farming districts. Small-scale family agriculture is the basis of the national economy however agricultural production is low and farmers’ income is often insecure. Local food and cash crop production do not meet national or export demands. An organised agricultural sector will make a fundamental and sustainable contribution to the economy and significantly reduce poverty across farming communities. Local development of the farming sector could provide future sustainable alternatives to the the high dependence on finite oil and gas resources in the Timor Sea. APHEDA partners currently work across nine districts with over 1\,200 direct beneficiaries. Field organisers live alongside the farmers to support them to develop strong and democratic farmer bases which are able to organise rural communities\, mobilise existing resources and facilitate access to capital\, credit\, land and seeds for agricultural production. \nPeter McMullin \n \nPeter McMullin has a long-standing relationship with Timor-Leste. He is an international business adviser to Timor-Leste’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and serves as Victoria’s Honorary Consul to Timor-Leste in Victoria. An active philanthropist\, he was key to establishing the Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness at Melbourne University Law School. More recently he established The Good Business Foundation\, a progressive foundation looking at engaging business in social good. \nBy going along … you will be doing some good \nThis event is to launch a campaign to raise funds to allow Elsa and Lanu to be part of the 888 Co-operative Causeway co-working space in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. Net proceeds (after paying for catering for finger food on arrival) will go to the fundraising drive. \nNote: unfortunately venue not fully disability accessible. \n888 Co-operative Causeway is the first registered co-operative (non-distributing/not-for-profit) co-working space in Victoria. More than just a co-working space\, we are a network of micro-organisations and freelancers active in the social economy. Among our goals is the desire to collaboratively build a better Victoria for the common good. \n

SUMMARY:Who's afraid of Big Data (a Jobs Killer)?
DESCRIPTION:Image: Edgarodriguezmunoz (Wikimedia Commons) \nIs data-fueled automation realistic or hyperbole? \nIn recent times ‘big data’ has become synonymous with “automation” as data fuels the artificial intelligence behind systems designed to replace workers. Is this really the future of the workplace and if it is\, is it imminent or do we have time to influence the roll out of new technology? \nDiscuss the hopes and opportunities that advances in data analytics can bring to individuals\, organisations and the workforce as a whole in the context of the ‘future of work’. \nOur speakers will explore the likely impacts of big data and automation\, as well as reflecting on the current hype around big data and expectations for what comes next… \n \nLizzie O’Shea – is a lawyer\, writer\, and broadcaster. She is regularly featured on national television programs and radio to comment on law\, digital technology\, corporate responsibility\, and human rights\, and her writing has appeared in the New York Times\, Guardian\, and Sydney Morning Herald\, among others. She is the author of Future Histories\, a book that outlines how very human our understanding of technology is\, and what potential exists for struggle\, for liberation\, for art and poetry in our digital present. \n \nSarah Barker is the Director of Data Intelligence at Our Community\, a world-leading B Corporation that provides advice\, connections\, training and easy-to-use tech tools for people and organisations working to build stronger communities. Sarah leads Our Community’s Innovation Lab\, trialling and refining methods for managing and learning from data in the social sector. Sarah is an energetic leader and enjoys building relationships\, creative thinking and continuous learning. \n \nDon Sharples is the founder of Altometer Business Intelligence (and a co-working member of 888 Co-operative Causeway) – he believes that data should be for everyone to make the most of. You can read about some of his ideas here. \n \nTim Lyons is a Research Fellow at think-tank Per Capita and Deputy Chairman of a large Industry Superannuation Fund. SUMMARY:Solidarity Economy Learning Circle
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to building a new kind of economy that is built on mutuality\, shared ownership and co-operation – a solidarity economy – many of us are convinced. We know that the extractive economy can’t continue without causing increasing levels of economic inequality\, environmental destruction and human suffering. We know why we need change. \nHowever\, there is an increasing hunger to find out how we can start to really build things together. If this observation is correct then it might be a good time to form a learning circle for this new kind of economy. \nThe 888 Co-operative Causeway has a small co-working space in the centre of the Melbourne CBD. Members have been organising workshops and panels for quite some time. However\, the Causeway would like to change course a little and bring more like-minded people together to learn\, share and practically develop approaches to building the solidarity economy. These discussions would occur monthly at 6pm on the last Tuesday of the month at the Causeway space with those attending having the opportunity to continue on for drinks and/or a meal at the Kelvin Club. \nOur learning circle explorations will be focussed on addressing questions relating to meeting basic human needs – community\, education\, energy\, food and water\, health and shelter through new and old approaches as outlined in the above diagram from Solidarity NYC. The group would be self-managed with a revolving convenor and invited leaders to inform our discussion and fact-finding. \nWould you and/or your organisation/network like to join us? \nCome along to our first discussion Tuesday November 27 at 6.45-7.45pm – the Kelvin Club to informally discuss how we can run the learning circle and what topics to choose first. Pre-Christmas drinks and a meal will also be an option!

SUMMARY:Co-operative Approaches to the Affordable Housing Crisis
DESCRIPTION:The home ownership dream is increasingly out of reach and everyone in Victoria is feeling the impact. Co-operative housing most commonly sits in the ‘social housing’ space but is starting to be discussed as a shared ownership option too. The idea is pretty new to Australia – so we thought it was time to start a public conversation even if we don’t know all the answers yet. \nJoin 888 Co-operative Causeway Patron Magaret Feeney for an exploration to be led by our very own Co-operative Causeway member (and seasoned facilitator) Jacinta Cubis to discuss the value of existing co-operative housing options\, as well as new global and local developments in shared/mixed equity co-operative housing to address our affordable housing crisis. \nJoin these leading practitioners and experts to help us explore these opportunities: \n\nJacques Boulet\, Borderlands Co-operative\nNicola Foxworthy\, Common Equity Housing\nElena Pereyra\, Co-housing Australia.\n\nAs an added bonus we welcome Waffle Irongirl (pictured below) for a slam poetry response (be warned Waffle Irongirl – for the uninitiated – is the poetical analogue of a heavy metal karaoke!). \n  \nPlease note: basic casual attire required at this event – no thongs\, singlets or shorts. \nBackground\nVictorian Government analysis has found that median house prices in Melbourne have risen by over 40% since 2012 (49% in regional Victoria). One result is that from 1994-95 to 2013-14\, home ownership rates dropped from 76% to 69% of Victorian households. Social housing in Victoria for people experiencing hardship has grown overall but as a proportion of total housing\, the share of this housing type has fallen. At the most extreme end\, we are seeing increasing numbers of homeless people surfing couches\, living in cars or sleeping rough on the streets of Melbourne. \nWe find that these issues hit young people\, older women and inner-city low-middle income workers the hardest. We all need a ‘roof over our head’ to have a strong base to enjoy the peace and prosperity that should be the birthright of all Victorians.

SUMMARY:Transforming Governance for People and Planet
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to a one-day interactive workshop\, to be held on Saturday 28th July.\n\n\n\nGovernance is at the heart of the great challenges we face – whether or not our democracies can protect that which we mutually depend on for our survival and wellbeing. We are at a crossroads. Will we live in a world of oligarchs\, where a class of super-rich and powerful people and corporations dictate policy and law to the detriment of people and planet? Or will the aspirations for distributed\, participatory and contributory decision-making create a world of deep democracy and transparency where citizens have real lateral power in deciding the nature of our world? \nThis one day short course is an introduction to thinking about the futures of governance and democracy. In it we will explore the outline of the shifts taking place from a global perspective\, current challenges\, and the many new innovations\, experiments and pathways that are harbingers of change. From the community meeting to the office and work environment\, to our local municipal\, state and federal systems\, and to the global system\, the context has shifted and the stage has been set for dramatic changes. At what scale and where do you want to play? This course will provide an overview of the big trends in governance and provide ways in which participants can consider how they want to participate and shape the future. This course brings forth ideas for transforming governance in plain language\, with strategies that anyone can use to empower themselves and their communities. \nThis workshop will present and explore: \n\nthe idea of the “commons” as a framework for rethinking governance;\nhow the commons framework provides answers to the critical challenges we face in areas such as: resource management\, ecological protection / rights of nature\, addressing oligarchy\, protecting digital / knowledge commons\, humanising and democratising our work and community life\, etc;\nan overview of critical historical shifts that bring into relief the great transitions we are experiencing in the early 21st century;\nexamples from around the world that demonstrate transformations in governance\, and which point to new futures – the many new innovations\, experiments and pathways that are emerging around the world in response to our challenges;\na deep questioning of when our democracies protect and build the commons\, and when they undermine them\, and what strategies we might take as societies to ensure healthy democracy and the protect and build our commons.\n\nSpecific topics that will be covered include: \n\nbioregional governance\ncommons governance\nworkplace democracy and decentralised decision making\nliquid democracy (and other e-democracy systems)\nrights of nature / Earth jurisprudence\nurban collaborative governance\npeer to peer / digital commons governance\nparticipatory and contributory democracy\novercoming the challenges of oligarchy / plutocracy\nglobal / planetary governance\nanticipatory governance\n\nThe workshop will be run as a mix of presentations\, audio-visual content\, interactive discussions\, games and self-guided reflection. \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will understand the big shifts and issues in governance\, and the ways in which they can participate in our great transitions and in shaping the future. \nABOUT THE WORKSHOP PRESENTERS\n\nDr. Jose Ramos\, futurist and Director of Action Foresight\, brings over 15 years’ experience writing about cultural\, political and economic change and designing\, teaching and facilitating courses on social change\, strategic foresight\, commons governance and socio-political transformation.\nDr Michelle Maloney\, lawyer and National Convenor of the Australian Earth Laws Alliance (AELA) has been working for 25 years at the intersection of ecological and social justice\, and is passionate about building Earth centred law\, governance and ethics.\n\nTogether\, Jose and Michelle offer a fun\, stimulating day that will help you think differently about your place in the governance of your communities and world. \nCOST\n$120 standard \n$90 concession \n$80 early bird \n* Several scholarships are available for students and others who wish to attend. SUMMARY:Co-operative Capital Raising Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Show us the Money\n\n“In developing intergenerational self-reliance\, co-operatives help to reduce welfare dependency… provide jobs for local people\, offer goods and services and use procurement practices that support local business” – McClure Welfare Review report \nThe recent government welfare report recognised the importance of growing the co-op sector. One barrier that co-ops face\, as social enterprises\, is capital. \nSo how can co-operatives raise capital? How can we invest in co-operatives? The Co-op Capital Symposium presents a rare opportunity for expert insight into these questions. \nSocial impact investors\, co-operatives\, social enterprise developers and public service officials are invited to learn about investing in co-operatives from practitioners and successful co-operatives through case-study based presentations and small-group breakouts. \nThis is particularly pertinent at a time when social impact investment is maturing and co-operatives\, such as the National Health Co-operative and The Co-operative Life\, are some of the fastest growing social enterprises in Australia. \n  \nAgenda\n\n\nWelcome & introduction: Melina Morrison\, CEO BCCM\nIntroduction to Co-operative Capital: Robyn Donnelly\, Co-op legal specialist\nAccessing debt-finance: Bank Australia\nWhat are CCUs and how do we use them?: Rohan Clarke – Partner\, Co-operative Bonds\nRaising millions with the humble member share: Taryn Lane – General Manager\, Hepburn Wind\nFonterra Case Study: Aaron Jenkins\, Syndex\nGreen Brick Manufacturing Co-op capital raising exercise: Paul Curtis\, Director of Green Brick Manufacturing Co-op\n\n  \n\nAbout the Speakers\n\nRobyn Donnelly\, Co-op legal specialist: Robyn Donnelly is a co-operative legal specialist who has worked as a solicitor\, barrister and academic\, as well as in the public service as Legal Manager for the NSW Registrar of Co-operatives and Associations. SUMMARY:Dignity of labour in the gig economy
DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, this event has been postponed until later in the year. Apologies to those who had reserved tickets\, we’ll be organising refunds and rescheduling over the next couple of days… \nPurposeful work can be the cornerstone of a meaningful life. With the breakdown of traditional modes of secure work through casualization\, labour hire\, independent contracting and the use of online platforms such as Airtasker\, the nature of work has become precarious for many. At the same time\, more flexible arrangements have created new opportunities for people to pursue work/life balance. Emerging technologies are only exacerbating these trends – raising questions like: \n\nWhat ways can regulators promote better industrial relations?\nHow can platform cooperatives create new ways for people to work together?\nWhat ingredients are required to promote dignified and secure work?\nHow can independent workers pull together to rebalance markets?\n\nJoin us at the Kelvin Club for a night of thought provoking views and discussion with our speakers: \n\nRobyn Kaczmarek\, The Co-operative Life\nGodfrey Moase\, National Union of Workers\nEleanor Coffey\, Redgum Cleaning Co-operative (Earthworker co-operative)\n\n
