Australians are living in a time of uncertainty post bushfires, and now during a pandemic. Can we look to each other for mutual support in these uncertain times?

Basil Varghese, a veteran Melbourne-based community builder and advocate for social justice, will lead a dialogue with Melina Morrison (pictured), CEO of the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM), about how cooperation and co-operative enterprises can play a part in building our way out of the crisis, and into new prosperity. We will also hear about what personally drives this engaging social economy leader. Find out:

• What drew Melina to co-ops and the BCCM?
• How do co-ops empower people to lift themselves out of poverty?
• Where co-operatives stand after a series of local (fires, drought) and global (COVID-19) crises.

Melina Morrison is a well-known advocate for member owned businesses. Melina was successful in advocating for a Federal Government inquiry into the co-operative and mutual business sector, which handed down 17 ground-breaking reforms. This led to the first enabling legislation for Australian mutuals in 18 years permitting them to raise new investment whilst safeguarding their cherished mutuality.

Basil’s Table is an interview series conducted by Basil Varghese, a well-known Melbourne- based community builder and advocate for social justice, who has long been committed to ‘bridging the gap between those that have and have not’. As a Patron of 888 Co-operative Causeway, Basil hosts these conversations with special guests on topics relevant to building a more cohesive and connected community across Victoria.
